AusAlert is a new national emergency warning system that will deliver faster, more precise alerts to people in danger during disasters.

By: CMAA

In a world where disasters like bushfires, floods and storms can escalate quickly, timely warnings are vital. The Australian Government is rolling out a new national emergency alert system called AusAlert.

AusAlert uses modern cell broadcast technology to send emergency notifications straight to mobile phones, bypassing traditional text messages that can be slowed by network congestion.

Instead of SMS, AusAlert will deliver messages tailored to a very specific location, to within 160 metres — sometimes to as little as a single street or building — so people in harm’s way can be warned quickly and accurately. That’s a big step forward from the older system, which could struggle to get messages to everyone on time during major emergencies.

The system will alert for a range of serious events including natural hazards like bushfires, floods and cyclones, public safety threats, biosecurity risks and health emergencies.

The trial and how the rollout will work

Before AusAlert becomes fully operational, the Government is conducting phased testing to make sure it works smoothly.

Here’s what’s planned:

June 2026 – Community Trials

In June, a series of smaller tests will be conducted in a range of urban, regional and remote areas across the country. These trials are designed to check the technology in real-world settings and to build community familiarity with what the alerts look and sound like. Locations include:

Liverpool, NSW

Port Douglas, QLD

Majura, ACT

Launceston, TAS

Geelong, VIC

Tennant Creek, NT

Goomalling, WA

Port Lincoln, SA

Queanbeyan, NSW (cross border test)

27 July 2026 – National Test

Everyone with a compatible phone across Australia will receive a nationwide test alert at 2pm AEST on Monday 27 July 2026. This is a big moment for awareness and checking that the system can reach as many devices as possible.

October 2026 – Operational Launch

The Government aims for AusAlert to be fully operational by October 2026, just ahead of the 2026–27 high-risk weather season.

What Australians can expect

AusAlert messages are designed to stand out:

They will appear on your phone screen even if it’s locked, on silent or in Do Not Disturb mode.

They use a distinct sound and vibration for the most urgent alerts.

Alerts can include information about what is happening, where it is, how severe it is and what action to take, along with a link to more details.

There are two types of alerts:

Critical alerts: For immediate threats to life and property. These have a fixed volume and cannot be disabled.

Priority alerts: Less intrusive messages that you can opt out of.

About 90 per cent of phones in Australia are expected to be compatible, especially models from recent years.

What you should do if you receive an alert

If you get an AusAlert message:

Read it carefully before dismissing it. Alerts provide specific actions you should take.

Follow official guidance, whether it’s to evacuate, seek shelter, or stay informed through emergency services.

If you’re unsure what the alert means, check state or territory emergency services websites or official social channels for updates.

Remember: these messages are there to help you make safe choices quickly.

Sharing the news and helping others

This is a new system, and not everyone will understand it immediately. Here are ways your community can support one another:

Helping older generations

Explain that AusAlert is not spam or a virus: it’s an official emergency system.

Show how alerts might look and sound on everyday phones.

Remind them not to ignore it, even if it’s loud or catches them by surprise.

Talking with teenagers and young adults

Most teens already use smartphones regularly, so focus on why the alerts matter.

Encourage them to share accurate info with family and friends on social media or group chats.

Provide feedback

The Government will be seeking feedback as the system rolls out.

Engaging with local emergency services and participating in community trial feedback helps improve AusAlert before it becomes fully operational.

Minister for Emergency Management Kristy McBain said the community testing and national test are significant milestones for AusAlert.

“The Albanese Government is undertaking these tests to ensure the technology performs as expected, and to build community awareness before AusAlert is needed in an actual emergency,” Ms McBain said.

“This is an important project that will help us and emergency services organisations warn people when they are in harm’s way, saving lives and protecting property during a disaster, delivering on a key finding from the Royal Commission into National Natural Disaster Arrangements.

“This is a major development in Australia’s emergency communication landscape, and I thank Australians in advance for their cooperation as we move into the launch phase for AusAlert ahead of the next high risk weather season.”

As conflict escalates around the Middle East, Open Doors Australia invites Australians to pray with 7 specific prayer points.

By: CMAA

As military strikes continue to rock Iran and surrounding countries, it can be difficult to know what’s going on – or how to pray. Open Doors Australia, who serve the persecuted church around the world, offers seven specific prayers.

Open Doors CEO Adam Holland shares about religious persecution faced by Christians in Iran. Ranked as the 10th most dangerous country for Christians, Iran presents a harsh environment for those choosing to follow Christianity, as they often face discrimination and violence. Through this conversation, Adam sheds light on the complexities faced by Christians in Iran and the wider Middle East and calls for prayer and support as the conflict intensifies.

Benjamin is an Iranian Christian who has lived in Sydney for more than a decade. He discussed the anguish he and his church family feel for their relatives and friends in Iran. Benjamin believed God’s word has foretold what is happening in Iran, and he knows God can use the Middle East conflict to bring more Iranian people to his saving Son, Jesus.

Please note, names have been excluded for to protect people’s safety.

The situation is fluid and can be difficult to follow. On Saturday, 28 February, the United States and Israel killed Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the long-time Supreme Leader of Iran, along with other high-level officials. An Iranian TV presenter announced his death, while the channel aired archive footage marked with a black mourning banner. The country declared 40 days of mourning.

At the same time, videos on social media showed Iranians celebrating the death of the Ayatollah. In other countries around the world, Iranian expatriates and refugees took to the streets in jubilation.

“The death of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei marks a significant and sobering moment in Iran’s history,” an Open Doors analyst and an Iranian Christian said.

“I cannot ignore that under his leadership, the church in Iran lived for decades under intense pressure, facing restrictions, surveillance, arrests and the constant weight of uncertainty. Many faithful believers endured suffering simply for following Christ.
“This moment is not about revenge or triumph, but about the possibility of a different future,” he said.

“One where freedom of conscience, dignity and justice are extended to all Iranians, regardless of faith or background. My prayer is that this turning point will open the way for peace, reconciliation and genuine freedom for our nation.”

“The sound is very frightening”

Meanwhile, the strikes continue as the world wonders what will happen with Khamenei out of power.

“The sound of the explosions is very frightening. The loud fighter jets are carrying out terrifying attacks,” an Iranian Christian living in a town near the capital said. She was able to get a message out to Open Doors partners just before the internet connection was cut off throughout the country.

“However, I believe that God will save me and deliver me from this war.”

Iranians have begun to tape up their windows to resist the force of the strong explosions taking place as they remain indoors in this unstable situation.

The violence has also begun to spread around the region as Iran retaliates against the attacks.

“We are hearing the sound of explosions and airplanes,” an Iraqi believer in Erbil in northern Iraq said. Another Christian said her house “was shaking” by the explosions this weekend.

Open Doors sources in Erbil report that this morning, Iran has tried to attack the American consulate in Erbil. The attacking drones were shot down before they could hit the consulate.

“We had at least five rockets exploding, and we hear constantly fighter jets above us. We are worried that Iran-backed groups will plan attacks in our region on American targets,” an Open Doors source said.

Iran has also carried out attacks in countries throughout the Arabian Peninsula, including Kuwait, Qatar, Saudi Arabia the United Arab Emirates and Oman, primarily targeting US military sites, Israeli government offices and international shipping areas.

Before midday on 2 March, a Christian living in one of the Arabian Peninsula countries sent this message: “Missiles and sirens close to home. Alerts going off on phones. Windows rattling. We’re going to the shelter, please pray.” We can’t tell you exactly which country this believer lives in because the region is so dangerous for Christians.

While most of Iran’s missiles were intercepted by defense systems, some have hit land, causing demolition, fires and destruction. “We received recurring alerts on our phones, urging us to remain indoors and not to go out except for urgent matters,” another Christian living in the Gulf area shared.

“The sounds we heard were very intense and scary.”

Impact across the Middle East

Attacks are also happening throughout the Levant. Hezbollah, a political party and paramilitary group in Lebanon and an ally of Iran, sent rockets into Israel, and Israel responded with strikes in Beirut and elsewhere in Lebanon. According to Syrian sources, an Iranian missile or its remnants have fallen on a residential building in the city of Suwayda, killing five people. Civil air traffic in Syria was also suspended. Iran targeted a US military base in Jordan, and the country has dealt with debris from intercepted attacks.

Due to the rocket attacks from Iran on Israel, many citizens in Israel and Palestine have had to hide in the shelters.

“We hear rockets and airplanes all the time,” one of our sources in the West Bank said. “The people are upset in the West Bank. Since the Gaza war ended, tourists have come back to the area. This will stop all tourism again, and many Christians depend on tourism for their jobs and income. Please pray for an end to this war and for all politicians to put aside their own interests.”

No one is sure how the situation will resolve or when the war might end. US President Donald Trump suggested the operation against Iran could last four to five weeks or longer, and no one knows who the replacement will be for Ayatollah Khamenei.

Resilience, hope and prayers

But an Open Doors analyst and Iranian believer reminds us that no matter what happens, there is hope.

“Even in hardship, the [Iranian church] has remained resilient, prayerful and deeply rooted in hope,” he said.

And some believers look forward to the end of the war and pray for a more lasting peace.

“We are Christian converts who fled Iran because of persecution. Not having any freedom to express and live out our faith, we endured years of displacement and lived as refugees,” one Iranian believer said.

“We are so hopeful that we would be able to go back to our homeland. May God bring peace and protect the whole Middle East through this time of change for Iran.”

No matter what happens, we know that God is in control. And remarkably, He’s offered us the gift of bringing all of the uncertainty and our hopes and fears to Him in prayer.

Here are just a few ways you can pray right now

1. Prayer for prisoners in Iran

Pray for the protection of prisoners, that they would not be used as human shields or exploited in times of conflict.

Ask God to guard their lives, uphold justice and surround them with His mercy and presence.

2. Prayer for pregnant women in Iran

Pray for mothers who are in the last weeks of pregnancy, facing intense stress and limited access to hospitals and medical care.

Ask for peace, safe deliveries, protection for both mother and child, and divine provision of medical help where it seems impossible.

Ask for strength, endurance, boldness, wisdom and multiplied grace in these challenging times.

From Generation Beta to AI, rage bait, global politics and pop culture, this year-in-review explores the key trends and events that defined 2025.

By: Mark McCrindle

As futurists we often look to the future and assess trends to determine what might be ahead.

While the future is what we look to, we also need to look back and see the events that have preceded us. In this article we provide a year in review and look at the key trends and events that impacted 2025.

Key Trends and Events of 2025

Welcoming Generation Beta: January 1, 2025, marked the birth of Generation Beta (those born 2025–2039).

The Return of Trump: The inauguration of Donald Trump on January 20 set the tone for a year of tariffs and volatility. The “America First” approach rippled through global markets, accelerating the trend toward economic fragmentation, tariffs and the U.S government shutdown.

Hollywood had a mixed year for movies, but in global news the Chinese animated film “Ne Zha 2” shattered records, grossing nearly $2 billion globally, signaling a shift in the center of gravity for cinema. Meanwhile, “A Minecraft Movie” became a nearly billion dollar hit driven by Gen Alpha fans and their craze for Chicken Jocky.

Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce announced their engagement with a wedding expected in 2026. Jeff Besos also got married to media personality Lauren Sánchez in Italy.

Rage Bait and Parasocial Voted Words of The Year

The Oxford word of the year being ‘rage bait’ is defined as “Online content deliberately designed to elicit anger or outrage by being frustrating, provocative, or offensive, typically posted in order to increase traffic to or engagement with a particular web page or social media account.”

Capturing a key feature of social media platforms that amplify not which is correct or true, but that which gets engagement and increases time on device, rage baiting has become a strategy for content creators to create engagement and provoke conversations.

The Cambridge Dictionary named ‘parasocial’ their word of the year. Defined as “Involving or relating to a connection that someone feels between themselves and a famous person they do not know, a character in a book, film, TV series, etc., or an artificial intelligence”. Again amplified by social media, streaming and now AI platforms, people can have a sense of connection to celebrities or influencers they know only through a screen.

Other words considered include aura farming, biohack, tariff and AI slop.

Colour of The Year

Pantone’s Colour of the Year 2025 was Mocha Mousse “Capturing a Global Mood of Connection, Comfort, and Harmony”. The color expresses a level of indulgence but has a nod of humility in its grounded and foundational nature.

“For Pantone Color of the Year 2025, we look to a mellow brown hue whose inherent richness and sensorial and comforting warmth extends further into our desire for comfort, and the indulgence of simple pleasures that we can gift and share with others.” – Laurie Pressman, Vice President of the Pantone Color Institute

In our research on the megatrends shaping the consumer landscape, we wrote that even during economic strain, consumption decisions are intertwined with identity. People try to navigate financial challenges with dignity and style. Prioritising small luxuries during these times can often provide comfort, when other aspirations feel out of reach. Customers are stuck between valuing affordability due to their circumstances and splurging on what makes them feel good.

Generation Beta started Being Born

This year was particularly special as we welcomed Generation Beta. Coming after Gen Z and Gen Alpha, Generation Beta is defined as those born between 2025 and 2039. By 2035 they will make up 16% of the global population, they will be the children of younger Gen Ys (millennials) and older Gen Zs and many will live to see the 22nd century.

We’ve seen the impact of AI on adults over the past few years, for Generation Beta they will be immersed in it from birth. If the trend of digital payments and currency continue they’re likely to be the last generation to touch physical money, and may even live in a world where the majority of cars are self driving. For more on Generation Beta download the infographic.

TIME Person Of The Year

The TIME magazine announced “The architects of AI” as the person of the year. The acceleration of AI and it’s growing investment made it’s mark on 2025 with ongoing competition from companies creating the frontier models, along with companies like Nvidia making chips and the companies providing data centres that run the infrastructure.

What’s Ahead For 2026?

Every year at McCrindle we launch research on the trends we expect to influence the year ahead.
Every year we launch our research backed trends that will impact businesses and organisations in the year ahead. In this article we provide a summary of the trends.

1. Supply-demand squeeze

Housing shortage meets population growth, eroding the Australian dream

In this we are seeing the growing pressure on communities, families and individuals who are experiencing the housing supply – demand squeeze. The problem with this shortfall is that housing becomes more expensive when demand exceeds supply, incentivising further investment into a rising price, further reducing accessibility to affordable housing and disadvantaging a younger generation of Australians who are simply priced out of the housing market.

This challenge is slowly eroding public confidence and creating intergenerational frustration, especially among young people who feel they are being actively disserved by past policy decisions and a system that no longer rewards hard work with the same security their parents enjoyed.

2. Intentional living

A shift from passive engagement to active choice, where people are living life on their terms

Intentional living is a purposeful shift from passive consumption to active creation. It’s a mindful rejection of “hustle culture,” where people make conscious choices about their time, energy, and resources. When it comes to the long-term goals people have there is a lift in the social, health and financial goals as well as simplicity of life and time spent outdoors.

People are being more selective with their relationships and investing in social currency. This trend prioritises community connection, personal well-being, and alignment with core values over societal pressures or expectations.

3. Productivity pivot

Integrating AI through workflow redesign, unlocking AI-driven productivity

The future of work is undergoing a fundamental shift, moving past the old fears of human vs. machine and into a new era defined by the productivity pivot. As artificial intelligence and powerful tools like ChatGPT become commonplace, the focus for both businesses and employees is no longer on if AI will impact their jobs, but how to effectively integrate it. This has raised the skills floor for everyone, creating a new imperative to redesign workflows and retrain the workforce.

71% of workers are integrating AI into their workflow in some capacity. But not all workers are integrating AI into their workflows, Gen X are twice as likely as Gen Y and Gen Z to not currently use AI in their work. The Gen Y cohort is leading the redesign of workflows, they’re now well into their careers and have become experienced workers and managers. They’re closely followed by the digital natives Gen Z who are also redesigning workflows.

The two big benefits of AI integrated workflows is the improvement in productivity and efficiency, as well as the improved quality of work. As AI becomes more embedded into workflows it’s more than just a mindset shift from seeing AI as threat to a tool. 2026 will be a time to train your people to review and redo workflows, and the best place to go to start is where there’s repetitive elements in your current workflows.

4. Personality premium

Amidst declining trust, consumers are looking for unique and relatable brand personalities to engage with

In an era marked by declining institutional trust, consumers are turning away from faceless corporations and placing their trust in individuals. As society becomes more sceptical of traditional institutions, be it government, media, or large companies, people seek genuine connection and authenticity from the people behind the products and services. This has given rise to a new marketing paradigm where a brand’s most valuable asset is its relatable, authentic, human element.

As society becomes more sceptical of traditional institutions, be it government, media, or large companies, people are seeking genuine connection and authenticity from the people behind the products and services.

5. Hope under strain

Cultivating agency in an uncertain world

The pressures of rising cost of living, geopolitical volatility and polarisation is taking a toll on global wellbeing. The current outlook for Australia is marked by declining optimism, a reflection of the external threats and challenges many face. While 64% of Australians remain optimistic about the country’s future in three years, this has declined from 72% in 2021.

Across society, uncertainty is rising and people are responding by building personal resilience and agency. It’s a shift from passive coping to proactive action, where individuals actively cultivate hope. By focusing on what they can control, their well-being, skills, and values, they empower themselves to navigate a complex environment, reducing reliance on external institutions.

Strategies for staying calm, caring for loved ones, and processing the aftermath of the Bondi Beach terror attack.

By: Steff Willis

Tragic and violent events can leave many of us feeling shaken — even when they don’t directly affect our own lives.

In the aftermath of devastating news, it’s common to experience a mix of emotions, from sadness and fear to anger, confusion, or numbness.

After what happened at Bondi Beach on Sunday, it’s important to care for your own wellbeing as well as knowing how to support your children during the chaos and uncertainty.

Start With Yourself

When distressing news breaks, your body and mind often go into alert mode. This can show up as anxiety, difficulty concentrating, trouble sleeping, or feeling emotionally overwhelmed.

Mental health professionals encourage beginning with the basics:

Try to maintain regular meals and sleep where possible

Get outside or move your body gently

Avoid relying on alcohol or other substances to manage stress

These small acts of care help regulate your nervous system and create a foundation for emotional processing.

Just as importantly, remind yourself that your reaction is normal. There is no “right” response to tragedy — and no expectation that you should be unaffected by it.

Be Mindful of Media Consumption

Staying informed matters, but constant exposure to traumatic headlines, commentary, and images can intensify distress.

If you notice rising anxiety:

Find a trusted news source that doesn’t sensationalise the situation

Limit how often you check the news

Avoid repeated viewing of graphic or emotionally charged footage

Take breaks from social media, where speculation and strong opinions can heighten fear

Choosing when and how you engage with the news can help protect your mental wellbeing.

Processing Strong Emotions

Fear and anger are common responses to violent events. These emotions don’t mean something is wrong with you — they reflect a desire for safety, justice, and understanding.

Healthy ways to process these feelings include:

Talking with a trusted friend or family member

Writing your thoughts down

Engaging in calming practices such as deep breathing, prayer, or quiet reflection

Acts of kindness and support — whether it’s checking in on a friend, volunteering, donating, or simply offering a listening ear — can help process feelings of fear, anger, or sadness.

If emotions feel overwhelming or persist over time, speaking with a counsellor or mental health professional can be a helpful and proactive step.

Helping Children Process

Children are highly sensitive to the emotions and events around them. Even if they haven’t seen the news themselves, they may pick up on your worry or hear fragments from friends or social media.

In response to the recent tragedy, parenting expert Dr Justin Coulson shared a social media post with guidance for parents on supporting children through distressing news. First, it’s important for parents to model calm and manage their own media consumption, as children notice how adults respond and feel safer when they see steady, composed reactions.

Some of the tips that Dr Justin Coulson provided included:

Be honest, but age-appropriate: Acknowledge what happened simply and calmly. For example: “There was a scary incident, but the police responded quickly, people are safe, and we’re safe.” Only give more details if children ask.

Watch for their reactions: Anxiety may appear as clinginess, trouble sleeping, irritability, or regression. Offering extra closeness, predictable routines, and gentle reassurance can help children feel secure.

Reassure them about safety: Emphasise that incidents like this are rare, and that families and communities are working to keep everyone safe.

By focusing on honest communication, reassurance, and close presence, parents can help children process unsettling news in a way that feels safe and manageable.

Finding Strength in Community

The Bible acknowledges sorrow and fear, while also reminding believers that God is near to the broken-hearted and present in times of trouble. What a comfort this is in times of uncertainty, fear and grief.

If distress begins to interfere with daily life — such as persistent anxiety, panic, withdrawal, or difficulty functioning — it may be time to seek additional help. Support is available through trusted friends, family, pastors, counsellors, or health professionals. In Australia, confidential services include:

Lifeline: 13 11 14

Beyond Blue: 1300 22 4636

Kids Helpline: 1800 55 1800

If you or someone else is in immediate danger, call 000.

Reaching out for support is a sign of strength, not weakness, and reminds us that even in difficult times, we are not meant to face challenges alone.

Australia is in mourning after a deadly shooting at a Hanukkah event in Bondi, with authorities confirming the sequence of events, honouring acts of bravery, and outlining heightened security and investigations now underway.

By: CMAA

On Sunday evening, Sydney’s Bondi Beach was the scene of a devastating mass shooting that authorities have officially described as a terrorist attack targeting the Jewish community during Hanukkah celebrations.

Yesterday’s Bondi shooting incident has left the city and the nation in shock and mourning.

Here’s what has been confirmed, what officials are saying now, and what comes next.

What Happened?

Just before 6.47 pm AEDT on Sunday, two armed men opened fire on crowds gathered at the “Chanukah by the Sea” Hanukkah event near Archer Park at Bondi Beach, a popular eastern suburbs location where families, children and visitors had congregated to celebrate the Jewish festival of lights. Police later confirmed the attack was a terrorist incident motivated by antisemitism.

Witnesses described hearing multiple shots, panicked crowds running for cover and chaos unfolding within minutes as people on the beach and in nearby parks sought safety. Police and emergency services quickly responded, cordoning off the area and urging the public to avoid Bondi while the situation developed.

Casualties and Arrests

Victims include men, women and children. Among them was Rabbi Eli Schlanger, a respected organiser of the Bondi Jewish community’s Chanukah celebration, who was killed during the attack.

Authorities have confirmed at least 16 people have died, including one of the attackers, and dozens more have been injured, with figures around 38 people wounded, including police officers. One suspected gunman was shot dead at the scene by police, and a second shooter was found critically wounded and taken into custody. An exclusion zone remains in place as investigations continue.

Police also discovered suspected improvised explosive devices in a vehicle associated with one of the shooters, which were later rendered safe by specialist bomb disposal teams.

Who Was Involved

As of 9:45am Monday, NSW Police Commissioner Mal Lanyon has confirmed the two suspected shooters at the Bondi Beach Hanukkah terror attack were a father and son, and police are not searching for any additional suspects.

Commissioner Lanyon said the pair, aged 50 and 24, carried out the attack that killed 16 people and wounded dozens during the “Chanukah by the Sea” event on Sunday evening. The older man was shot dead by police at the scene, while the younger remains in hospital under police guard in critical condition.

Authorities have clarified they believe only these two individuals were directly involved in carrying out the shooting and are not looking for anyone else connected to the attack.

Police also confirmed that the older man held a legal firearms licence with six registered weapons, which have now been seized, and that a raid on a Campsie property linked to the suspects has taken place as part of the investigation.

As investigations continue, NSW Police have significantly stepped up security around places of worship and public sites under Operation Shelter, and remain focused on piecing together how the attack was planned and carried out.

Acts Of Bravery

Amid the horror, heroic acts by civilians and first responders were widely reported.

One bystander, identified locally as 43-year-old fruit shop owner Ahmed al Ahmed, is being praised for tackling and disarming one of the attackers, an act that officials and community leaders say saved many lives. He was later hospitalised with gunshot wounds.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and NSW Premier Chris Minns both thanked those who helped others during the attack, calling them heroes whose bravery prevented further tragedy.

Official Responses

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese described the shooting as an “act of evil antisemitism” and vowed that Australia would confront hate and violence. He convened a meeting of the National Security Committee, reaffirmed support for the Jewish community and said the nation must remain united against division and terror.

NSW Premier Chris Minns echoed these sentiments, calling the events “deeply distressing” and reiterating that the community should follow police directions as the investigation continues.

NSW Police Commissioner Mal Lanyon officially declared the incident a terrorist attack and urged calm, stressing the importance of community cohesion while the criminal investigation unfolds.

King Charles III also issued a statement condemning the tragedy, saying he and Queen Camilla were “appalled and saddened” by the antisemitic violence and praising the courage of emergency services and civilians who acted to protect others.

What Authorities Are Advising Now

Police and government officials have urged people not to travel to Bondi Beach while the area remains an active crime scene and forensic investigations continue. Emergency services are treating it as an ongoing major incident.

The Australian Security Intelligence Organisation (ASIO) has kept the nation’s terrorism threat level at “probable,” meaning there is a significant likelihood of future attacks. Officials have said they are reviewing security measures at community centres and places of worship.

What Comes Next

Investigators are continuing to examine the motives behind the attack, including any links to extremist ideologies or overseas influences. Authorities have also indicated they will review how the suspects acquired their weapons, and whether more individuals were involved or inspired by external actors.

The incident has prompted increased security around Jewish institutions nationwide and a national conversation about rising antisemitism in Australia. Leaders from across the political spectrum and international allies have condemned the violence, expressed condolences to victims’ families, and reaffirmed support for Australia’s multicultural society.

The Bondi Beach shooting is one of the deadliest acts of violence in modern Australian history, striking at the heart of a community gathered for a peaceful celebration. As emergency services continue their work and the nation responds with unity and shock, the focus remains on supporting the victims, holding perpetrators to account and standing resolutely against hatred in all its forms.

As the December 10 social media changes draw closer, many Australian families are asking the same questions: Who will be affected? How strict will the rules be? And what does it all mean for our kids?

Nicole Jameson is a digital safety expert from Dark Horse Agency, she unpacks the facts. Here’s what you need to know, and how to prepare.

Under-16 Accounts Will Be Deactivated

The first major step of the new restrictions lands on 10th December, when social media platforms begin deleting or deactivating accounts belonging to users who have identified themselves as under 16.

According to Nicole, that’s:

150,000 young users on Facebook, and

Around 350,000 under-16s on Instagram.

That’s a massive shift – and only the beginning.

But Kids Have Already Found Workarounds

While the goal is to protect children, teenagers have had 12 months’ notice, and many have used it creatively.

Because kids often don’t mind losing old photos or videos, many simply:

Created new accounts with fake ages, or

Adjusted their birth dates to look older.

Platforms will conduct a “second wave” scan later to detect accounts that changed dates historically, but for now, many young users may slip through unnoticed.

Age Verification Rules Are Still Murky

One of the biggest concerns is the vagueness of the legislation.

Originally, the government planned to manage age verification. Now, tech companies must take “reasonable steps”, a phrase that leaves plenty of grey area.

Nicole explains that verification will require more than a simple checkbox. New sign-ups will need some form of identification, but it doesn’t necessarily have to be government-issued.

However, very few IDs list a date of birth and are not official documents.

What Identification Will Kids Need?

This remains unclear, but possible IDs may include:

Student IDs (many include date of birth, especially if linked to bus passes)

Passports, for those who have them

Learner’s permits, but only in some states and usually only from age 16

But Here’s The Big Concern:

Providing ID hands tech giants more personal data, including location, school details, and biometric data linked to photos. Nicole warns that such information allows extremely targeted advertising to teens once they re-join platforms at 16.

Are Adults Affected Too?

Yes – new adult accounts created after December 10 will also require age verification.

Nicole strongly encourages anyone with a small business or public profile to download their data now, just in case accounts are accidentally swept up in the deactivation process.

Existing accounts should remain untouched.

Different Platforms, Different Requirements

Because platforms are privately owned, each one is setting its own rules.

Most will require official identification – but some are taking it further. Nicole highlights one concerning case:

Snapchat may request:

Identity documents

Biometric facial data

Bank account details

That last requirement raises major questions about safety, privacy, and necessity, especially for everyday users simply trying to access a social platform.

What About International Comparisons?

Australia isn’t the first country to introduce these measures.

The UK launched similar rules under the Online Safety Act, which also restricts underage access to adult websites. While under-age traffic dropped significantly, the use of free VPNs skyrocketed 1,000–1,800%, suggesting teens quickly found loopholes.

Nicole worries Australia may see the same, pushing young people “underground” into riskier online spaces.

So What Can Parents Do Now?

Despite the uncertainties, Nicole says there is good news.

1. Talk with your children.

Make space at the dinner table for regular, honest conversation about:

What platforms they use

Who they follow

What they might encounter

How to respond to unsafe situations

2. Stay informed.

Follow reputable sources like:

eSafety Commissioner updates

Tech-safety educators

Experts who break down emerging trends and risks

3. Learn the platforms yourself.

Nicole often hears parents say, “I don’t care about TikTok” or “I think social media is stupid.” But kids don’t agree. Understanding their digital world helps you guide them confidently.

It’s Not All Bad News

Social media, used safely, still offers:

Community

Creativity

Connection

Opportunities for learning and support

As Nicole reminds us, there are always two sides to the coin.

With major changes coming on December 10, families will face new challenges, but also new opportunities to build trust, connection, and digital awareness.

Nicole will return to Table Talk in 2026 to share updates on how the rollout is tracking. Until then, proactive conversations and informed choices remain the best tools for keeping our kids safe online.

Learn how the new Support at Home program helps older Australians stay independent, what’s changing and how to prepare.

By: CMAA

Australia’s aged care system is entering a new era with the rollout of the Support at Home program, designed to make it easier for older Australians to live independently, safely and confidently in their own homes.

Coming into effect as part of the Aged Care Act 2024, the program responds to recommendations from the Royal Commission into Aged Care, focusing on quality, transparency and, most importantly, independence.

As Catholic Care’s Geoff Aigner explains, the changes are not just about policy, but about people. “The system is pushing what the department is calling ‘enablement’; keeping people able, happy and capable, connected in their homes,” he says.

What the program changes

The Support at Home program replaces previous home care arrangements with a simpler, more streamlined structure.

According to Geoff, there are several key updates older Australians and their families should understand:

Greater Choice and Control

“There’s a much higher focus on quality,” Geoff explains. “That should come through in people’s discussions with providers of home care services.”

Reduced administration costs

A new fee structure means less money goes to overheads and more toward direct services and support.

Means-tested Co-contributions

“If you’re a full pensioner, you’ll pay very little,” Geoff says. “Self-funded retirees will contribute more.”

Free Clinical Services

“Physio, occupational therapy, speech therapy; they all remain free for the lifetime of the program,” he adds.

Quarterly Budgets

Recipients are encouraged to use their funding regularly rather than save it. “Spend your money now,” Geoff says. “Very little will roll over quarter to quarter.”

Supporting Independence At Home

A major focus of the new program is enablement is helping older people stay active, connected and independent. “The idea is to support people before it’s too late,” Geoff explains. “We want to enable people to do as much as they can for as long as they can.”

He says this shift towards independence is also about dignity and respect. “Your body changes, your mind changes, the people around you change. It can be difficult. But we’re here to walk alongside older Australians through that journey.”

How To Prepare For The Changes

Applying for a Support at Home package can take time, so Geoff’s advice is to start early.

“This is a long process to apply, to be approved, to get a package, it can take over a year,” he says. “Things change rapidly as you get older. We want to enable people and support them before it’s too late to help them.”

He also encourages people to be honest during their assessment. “Don’t present your best self like it’s a job interview,” Geoff says with a smile. “Be really truthful about what you can and can’t do.”

Choosing The Right Provider

Once approved, finding the right care provider is an important step. Geoff encourages people to ask questions and prioritise quality.

“This is a really intimate service,” he says. “Somebody’s coming into your home — they could be cleaning, helping you shower, or taking you to appointments. You have every right to ask questions and make sure you feel comfortable.”

He also suggests asking about continuity of care. “Am I going to be seeing the same set of people, or are they changing every week? I want people to understand me and to feel comfortable.”

When it comes to cost, Geoff says cheaper isn’t always better. “If something is 30 or 40 per cent cheaper, there’s a reason for it,” he says. “Think about quality. This is not the time to think about saving money, it’s about getting the right support to stay independent.”

Agentic commerce is here. Discover how AI shopping agents will search, compare and buy for us, and what this shift means for brands

By: Michael McQueen

How Agentic Commerce is about to Redefine Retail Forever

Shopping as we know it is about to change – again. The era of agentic commerce is dawning, where AI agents shop, compare, and buy on our behalf. Fueled by generative AI, real-time data, and seamless payment integration, these digital “assistants” are evolving from simple chatbots into autonomous consumers.

The drivers are clear: advances in large language models, the integration of payment systems like PayPal and Venmo within ChatGPT, and growing consumer comfort with automation. Retailers, meanwhile, face both opportunity and existential threat as control over the customer journey begins to shift.

To understand what’s next, let’s explore five key trends reshaping the future of retail and commerce in the age of AI agents.

1. From Search to Conversation: Shopping Becomes Dialogic

Consumers are moving from search bars to conversations. Walmart’s recent partnership with OpenAI epitomises this shift: shoppers can now ask ChatGPT to “plan a taco dinner” or “restock pantry essentials,” receive curated suggestions, and check out – all within the chat.

Why it matters: Search-based discovery is giving way to contextual dialogue, making shopping more intuitive and personalised. Instead of typing keywords, consumers describe goals or moods and AI agents translate that into purchases.

Implications: Retailers must now optimise for AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) visibility rather than SEO. The “storefront” of the future may not be a website at all, but a conversation inside an AI ecosystem.

What to do: Brands should develop “agent-friendly” data schemas and product metadata so their items can be discovered, compared, and purchased via conversational agents.

2. The New Buyer Is a Bot: Agentic Commerce Arrives

Agentic commerce describes a world where AI agents act as autonomous shoppers – buying groceries, managing loyalty points, and even negotiating prices.

Why it matters: Instead of manually browsing and comparing, users will set rules (“buy detergent when it’s 20% off” or “reorder coffee every three weeks”), and agents will execute these automatically. Research shows that most consumers are interested in AI tools that can make purchases when prices drop.

Implications: Shopping becomes anticipatory rather than reactive. But as agents gain autonomy, questions of liability, consent, and trust loom large. For instance, who’s responsible if your AI buys something you didn’t intend to or don’t want?

What to do: Retailers should pilot transparent AI-agent interfaces that let customers review, approve, or override agent decisions to maintain confidence and control.

3. The Frictionless Checkout: Payments Go Invisible

PayPal’s integration with ChatGPT represents a crucial step toward invisible commerce – a world where transactions happen without leaving the conversation. Using OpenAI’s Agentic Commerce Protocol, PayPal now allows direct in-chat payments and merchant listings without extra integration work.

Why it matters: Payments are no longer the end of the funnel – they’re built into the interaction. This eliminates friction and allows “chat-to-checkout” in seconds.

Implications: Traditional payment gateways and checkout pages may fade. Trust, fraud prevention, and dispute resolution will instead be embedded directly in conversational layers.

What to do: Businesses should align with emerging open protocols to make their products agent-accessible and compatible with cross-platform AI ecosystems.

4. AI-Powered Customer Experience: The Age of Anticipation

The customer experience is evolving from reactive to predictive and proactive. McKinsey’s “Next Best Experience” model shows that AI-powered personalisation can boost satisfaction by up to 20% and reduce service costs by 30%. These systems detect when a customer needs help before they even ask.

Why it matters: The next frontier isn’t personalisation at scale; it’s personalisation in real time, driven by data and generative content. Agentic AI goes further by testing and refining communications autonomously, learning with every interaction. Consider how Yelp’s new AI receptionist and host bots can answer calls, take bookings, and even chat with other bots to coordinate reservations.

Implications: Companies should integrate predictive and conversational AI tools into their customer service stack—not just to improve efficiency, but to build anticipatory trust.

5. Retail’s Identity Crisis: Losing the Interface

While AI agents simplify the shopper’s life, they threaten to disintermediate retailers. As the Wall Street Journal notes, brands like Walmart and Etsy have jumped onto ChatGPT integration for exposure, but they risk ceding control over customer experience, data, and loyalty.

Why it matters: When AI assistants become the primary point of discovery, brand identity competes with algorithmic preference. Retailers’ lucrative ad and search ecosystems (which are worth billions annually) could erode as discovery shifts “upstream” into AI chats.

What to do: The winners will be those who co-create with AI platforms, ensuring their products and brand values are reflected accurately in conversational interfaces. Think API partnerships, branded agent personalities, and data-sharing agreements rather than banner ads.

Some concluding thoughts

The rise of agentic commerce marks a profound shift – from browsing to briefing, from searching to conversing, and from paying to being paid for by your AI.

As consumers hand over more decisions to digital intermediaries, trust, transparency, and control will define the next decade of retail. The question for brands is no longer whether AI will reshape shopping but who will own the relationship when it does.

To stay relevant, leaders must design for an audience of two: the human and the algorithm.

Blue moon, as we use it today, is less than a hundred years old. The idea of a black moon was only traced back to 2016.

By: Feranmi Taiwo

When you hear black moon, it sounds dramatic and almost apocalyptic. But as radio astronomer Dr. Laura Driessen explains, it’s not the end of the world. In fact, it’s a chance to see the stars more clearly.

What Exactly Is a Black Moon?

Dr. Driessen, from the University of Sydney, explains. She began by comparing it to a familiar phrase: “You’ve probably heard about blue moons before, especially the saying once in a blue moon,”she said.

A blue moon happens when there are two full moons in one month, or an extra full moon in a season. “A black moon is the same idea, except it’s a new moon instead of a full moon,” Dr. Driessen explained.

What Is a New Moon?

Many people get confused about new moons. Unlike a full moon, where the sun lights up the side we see, the new moon is dark. “The moon looks black because the far side is lit by the sun, not the side facing us,” Dr. Driessen said. In simple terms: during a new moon, the moon sits between Earth and the sun. We can’t see it at night.

So Can We See the Black Moon?

Not really. “The new moon is up during the day, rising at 6:30 a.m. and setting at 5:30 p.m.,” Dr. Driessen explained. That means the black moon itself is invisible. But that’s actually good news for stargazers. With no moonlight, the night sky appears brighter.

Perfect Conditions for Stargazing

The black moon most recently happened on in August this year. While you won’t have seen the moon itself, the stars and planets were stunning.

A Modern Name for an Ancient Moon

Interestingly, the term black moon isn’t ancient.

“Blue moon, as we use it today, is less than a hundred years old. The idea of a black moon was only traced back to 2016,” Dr. Driessen revealed.

So while the name may be new, the moon itself hasn’t changed.
